Candi Mendut

Mendut is a Buddhist-style temple. The temple is located on Jalan Mungkid City Mayor sills, Magelang regency, Central Java, to be located about 3 kilometers from Borobudur temple.

Mendut founded during the reign of King Indra of Sailendra dynasty. In the inscription Karangtengah the bertarikh 824 AD, mentioned that the king Indra has built a shrine called wenuwana which means bamboo forests. By a Dutch archeologist named J.G. de Casparis, this word is associated with Mendut.

temple architecture

Actual temple building materials are the bricks are covered with natural stone. The building is situated on a high basement, so it looks more elegant and sturdy. Stairs go up and the entrance facing south-west. In the basement there is a hallway that surrounds the temple. The roof is three-tiered and decorated with small stupas. The number of small stupas built now is 48 pieces.

Building height is 26.4 meters.

Buddhist Vihara Mendut

Just beside the temple there Mendut Mendut Buddhist monastery. This former monastery is a Catholic monastery which is then divided up the land to the people in the 1950's. Then these people's lands purchased by a foundation built upon Buddha and monastery. In this monastery there are dormitories, houses of worship, parks, and a statue of Buddha. Some of it is donated by Japan.

Kaliurang

Kaliurang is a small town about 25 kilometres (16 mil) north of the city of Yogyakarta on the southern slopes of Mount Merapi volcano in central Java in Indonesia .
Kaliurang is a resort town, popular as a weekend destination for visitors from Yogyakarta.
Attractions include the cool air,
views, and an extensive forested
park with trails. The town charges a small admission fee to visitors, paid at a booth on the busy main road from Yogyakarta.
The town was the location of
negotiations during the fighting
between the Dutch and Indonesians
in the 1940s, when the houses and holiday homes owned by the
Sultanate of Yogyakarta were used.
Kaliurang has been an important
base for vulcanologists in their
monitoring of eruptions of Merapi, especially when the southern slopes of the volcano become active.
Adjacent hills In the 1970s there was an observatory on the hill Plawangan, which is closer to Merapi, but with eruptions in the 1990s Plawangan was abandoned and the observatory
